Method and common questions

Tax, lending, holiday and protection rules vary by place and date. Check current local rules and provider terms. Results are estimates.

Estimate costs from electricity use

One kWh is the energy used by a 1,000 W appliance running for one hour. Example: 1,200 W for 8 hours a day over 30 days uses 288 kWh. At an assumed 0.25 currency units per kWh, that costs 72 units. The price is illustrative, not a local tariff quote.

Use electrical input power or measured energy use, not an air conditioner’s cooling capacity. Rated watts times hours is an estimate: variable speed, standby, operating conditions and duty cycles affect actual consumption.

Compare EV charging with your own tariff and petrol cost

Example: a 60 kWh battery charged fully 4 times a month gives 240 kWh in the model. At an assumed 0.25 units per kWh, charging costs 60 units. Subtract this from your monthly petrol cost in the same currency for a comparison difference, not a guaranteed saving.

The model omits charging losses, tiered or time-of-use tariffs, fixed fees, taxes, parking and per-session or per-minute charges. Check current local bills and charging-provider terms separately. The difference can be negative: a negative value means EV charging costs more.

Method

Monthly appliance kWh = W ÷ 1,000 × daily hours × 30; monthly EV kWh = battery kWh × full charges. Cost = total kWh × your tariff. Comparison difference = your monthly petrol cost − EV charging cost; fixed fees, taxes and charging losses are excluded. The difference can be negative: a negative value means EV charging costs more.

FAQ

Which price per kWh should I enter?
Use the per-kWh price on your local supplier’s or charging provider’s current bill, in one currency throughout. Check tiers, time bands, fixed charges and taxes separately. Defaults are examples only.
Should I use cooling capacity or electrical input power?
Enter electrical input power in W, not BTU or cooling capacity. Actual running power varies; use measurements or applicable supplier data where possible.
How can I estimate public fast-charging costs?
Set appliance watts to 0 and enter the provider’s per-kWh rate. Per-minute, per-session and parking charges are not modelled, and charging losses are not included.
