Method and common questions
How is fixed-deposit interest calculated?
Assume 100,000 currency units at 4% for 6 months: simple interest is 100,000 × 4% × 6/12 = 2,000, with about 102,000 units at maturity. Use one currency for all amounts; the values are examples only.
Simple, compound and monthly payout
- Simple: interest on the original principal only. Check whether your product actually uses simple interest, compounding or payouts; no method is assumed to apply to every bank or jurisdiction.
- Compound: interest is added to principal and earns interest itself; only applies if the product truly rolls over.
- Monthly payout: annual interest estimated and paid monthly; the principal does not grow.
Why your bank may pay a different amount
Banks may use actual days, a 365- or 366-day basis, value and maturity dates, minimum balances and new-funds conditions. When a term is quoted in days, follow the bank’s quote; the year/month modes here are for quick comparison.
Do not compare on the headline rate alone
- Check whether the offer is limited to new funds, a banking tier or online opening.
- Compare the actual term and interest at maturity; a short promotional rate is not a full year of income.
- Early withdrawal may forfeit interest or incur fees.
- If you need monthly cash flow, distinguish monthly payout from payout at maturity.
FAQ
- Does 4% p.a. mean I earn 4% in 3 months?
- No. The annual rate is pro-rated by term, so 3 months is roughly a quarter of a year’s interest, subject to the bank’s day count and terms.
- Is compound always better than simple?
- Only if interest can really be reinvested at the same rate. If interest is paid into another account at a different rate, it is not the same compounding.
Method
Simple interest, annual compounding and monthly-payout scenarios; no live bank rates are loaded or compared.
